Game Thread: Cincy @ CU—October 26 @ 8:15 PM ESPN

Word on the street is that Travis is as healthy as he's been in weeks, but his plays on both sides of the ball will be reduced. Expect Hood to play just as many downs at CB as Hunter.
Would make sense to pull back his reps a little bit. I do think he will still need to be viewed as a full time two way player to have a chance at the Heisman, though.

The impact on recruiting and perception of this program getting another Heisman Trophy winner can't be understated, which is why I am all in favor of continuing to feed him the ball, even if some of it is in garbage time.

A Heisman would make no difference to our program

I just don’t think it would make any difference to CU’s trajectory.
Elite players want to go to a place that isn't overlooked for the most prestigious award in College Football. If we can have a recent Heisman winner, all those guys who think that CU isn't a big enough stage would see that it is. The only thing that would be missing would be a CFP appearance, but I think everyone can see it's very feasible in the Big XII

So maybe it CAN be understated

You don't think Jayden Daniels winning the Heisman at LSU last year had any impact on the #1 QB recruit in this class (Bryce Underwood) choosing to go there? Think about how USC and Lincoln Riley is marketed because of his success with QBs winning the Heisman.

It's arguably the most visible and prestigious individual award in all of (American?) sports. It definitely matters.

Dammit man. He's just making a joke (twice now) - he DID understate it, which you said was impossible.

Bud Elliott took UC +5.5 and said it's the best offense we've played all year. Not so sure about that, but also, our defense has never been better imo
Bud "I'm 58% against the spread" Elliott? Jezus fricken Christos. I'm 60% against the spread and I don't even try. If Bud had any cajones he'd take the Cincy money line.

shooting my load on a pickem spreadsheet would yield better results than a guy named Bud Elliott.

Never trust a man with two first names

We seem much better suited for day games, and we've been way better on the road than at home for some reason. At the same time, this game is late for Cincinnati. It's gonna be a long, weird day for them, whereas we're kinda used to it by this point.

I think it's kind of on us. We continue the home (non)energy, it's a tough game we might lose. We somehow transfer the road energy back home, it should be an easy win.

I'll be nervous that we're gonna carry over the home energy until I see different.
As I learned when I first read the Borne Identity: sleep is a weapon.

This team needs to wrap its arms around my favorite pastime: Mid-day napping.

I watched the ASU vs Cincinnati game, and here are my thoughts:

Base offense is 11 personnel, with the occasional WR lining up in the backfield in on off pistol set. The run game looks a bit like the Shanahan style, where they block and the RB needs to make one cut and go. They are pretty effective in this, and mix in the occasional change of pace back, WR hand off, and QB run. The consistency of their run game ties well to their most effect part of the pass game, which is to fake the hand off and throw quickly to the WR on a slant/out/stop route. The QB is good at getting the ball to points 15 yards from the line of scrimmage and in. On most pass plays they have the TE and WR help block, so the QB doesn’t see much pressure. If the quick read isn’t there, this is where the success rate drops. The QB doesn’t do well finding WR. Occasionally the TE will leak out after blocking and he uses that to check down, but most of the time if the initial read isn’t there then the QB gets nervous. Watching Sorsby scramble seemed eerily similar to Kyle Orton, and in general I would say that is a perfect match in QB styles.

The Cincinnati D seemed to run a base 3-3-5, and they have a big NT to allow the set up to work. It was hard to get a real sense for the D since they were playing an ASU team lead by Jeff Sims. On passing plays 4 players would rush the QB, and it was pretty structured on who the 4th rusher would be. The DE’s weren’t monsters and the CB’s were OK. It seems that they were well suited to play against that ASU offense, but it doesn’t seem like it will line up well against us. I have heard in the press some talk about Cincinnati adjusting what they do to better line up against our O.

I’m always impressed when the base offense consists of 10 personnel.

I don't think this should be a surprise these days. Yakiri I knew was coming after what I saw on social after the game. And when you consider the OL rotation going on and the LB opportunities opening up via redshirts and whatnot... but these guys still not seeing the field... it's best that they go where they will get to play.
Johnson and Cheney are out of eligibility

I can honestly say, that in my 35 years as a CU football fan, I've never felt less emotion toward a conference opponent.

I've never seen Cincinnati play before (I'm not saying they haven't been good for a while - I've just never felt inspired to watch one of their games).

Just no opinion about them at all.
