Happy Football Season!!! (Official Camp Thread)

Re punt returns (even as opposed to KR), it's a lot more than just good hands and speed. You gotta be just a tad bit crazy which is why I think a lot of really good PR guys are safeties. Hitting and getting hit at full speed isn't something your average WR enjoys.

Sefo threw a very catchable ball on these types of passes. Accuracy wasn't always there, but on fades, screens and deep balls he knew how to deliver the touch passes.

Montez has a cannon, so he's having to learn that and was surprisingly adept at it last year. What really excites me with Montez, though, is that he's got the arm strength to zip that NFL style back shoulder throw on the sideline instead of always having to go over the top.

Agreed. And I hope that Chev is spending some time working with the WRs this fall on strategies for times when Montez extends plays with his legs. Montez brings an ability that Sefo just didn't have, both in terms of escapability and arm strength. I think there will be opportunities for big plays that were not there last year, and I hope the WRs are ready to capitalize on that.

Actually, I think the fade to the back corner of the end zone was one of the passes that Sefo threw most consistently. There several versions of it and he threw all of them really well.

In his forth year. Yeah. Finally and Hallelujah.

Many of those first and goal stands in 2014 & 2015 that ended with no points after a stuffed run up the middle and a stuffed QB sneak and a botched 3rd down pass attempt and/or poor time management was maddening.

MacIntyre's stock went way up last year when our WRs started catching Sefo's strikes in the end zone.

Yep. I've thought that "scramble drill" was the weakest part of Chev's coaching thus far. Actually, it's been my only complaint about his position group.

This.

You don't have to play him a lot on offense to get into the heads of the opponents. Just enough to give them a solid distraction in preparation. Use him as a decoy and give him one or two shots to get the ball in the open field and make a game changing play.

We have enough depth at CB that they can selectively get him a few plays of rest there so as not to over use him.
Is it a terrible option to have Oliver share PR duties with another? Reduce his exposure, but keep the opposing ST honest. And who knows, maybe that makes the opposing ST complacent when our other PR specialist is back there ready to receive?

I know the refs kind of botched the signaling a bit, but I get angry every time I think about the end of the 1st half against UCLA at Folsom when a young and inexperienced Sefo got flustered and watched the clock tick away resulting in 0 points in a game that was ripe for the taking of an early upset in the HCMM era.

I can kind of look back and chuckle a bit now. MM about had an aneurism. :ROFLMAO:

He's not the only one. I was yelling at the TV, "Run a ****ing play! Any ****ing play!"

Wasn't that the game we lost in OT when Brett Hundley, after sucking in the pass game, and keeping us in it, gave up all semblance of a pass game and just ran 2 QB draws to win?

Yeah. Air came out of the stadium when Tedric suffered that horrible injury.

Then the next year they dominated the Bruins in LA but bad turnovers or failure to punch it in at the end of drives gave the game away.

I thought getting over on them last season despite playing such a disjointed and sloppy game was one of the biggest monkeys to get off the program's back.

Not at all. You don't have to use him all the time but risk of putting him out there in the right situations is more than made up for by the potential for a game changing play and forcing the opponent to spend time preparing for him.

Plenty of top flight DBs have also returned punts to the benefit of their teams both at the college and the pro level. Was Dion Sanders not important to his defense? He was a weapon as a returner.

Champ Bailey was as good a CB as has ever played the college game. He also was a full time PR, KR, did punt coverage full time, kick-off coverage in key situations, and also had some packages on offense.

You don't be dumb about it but when you have a special player you need to take advantage and use those talents.

Not surprising to hear the defense is have inconsistencies. Still have about a week and a half to work some things out before CSU prep begins in earnest.

Udoffia was in good position, but Montez extending the play & throwing a dime and Bobo with the body control, timing & hands is just on an absolutely elite college level. Very few CBs in the nation could have defended that.

Don't like to see a DB give up a TD but as you said that one was special.

It's a positive that we have an offense that can challenge the defense. They aren't going to be surprised by the talent that other teams may throw at us.

Just a question but does Montez remind anybody else of Kaeprnick a bit? Similar sizes, Montez is bigger now. Both have big arms and are athletic.

You can see Montez is almost falling down when he launched that; kid's got an arm.

From Woelk's article:
Bobo, who made a name for himself last season with highlight-reel catches, had a pair on Saturday. He hauled in a long Montez throw at the goal line for a touchdown — the longest play of the scrimmage — then caught snared a scoring pass in an overtime drill, gathering the throw in on the run and breaking a tackle en route to the end zone.
The deep ball came as the "game clock" was expiring. Montez rolled to his left under pressure and somehow managed to put the ball almost 60 yards in the air on the money to Bobo, who got position on the defender and went up in the air for the catch.

Montez is a very different cat than Sefo. Buckle your seat belts, because this is gonna be a fun ride. People gonna hate us again. (y)

“I think Sefo was more of a humble guy,” Montez said. “I like to stay humble, but when I’m on the field, I think I’m the best player out there, so I think you have to play like that, especially as quarterback. And you have to believe you’re the best player on the field.”

Montez was also very vocal about how he enjoys talking a bit of trash to opposing players. He feels that his teammates feed off the energy that he brings to the practice field, and the cockiness that makes him the quarterback that he is.

“I think people dig that I’m cocky, especially people on the team . . . I think they like that,” Montez said.

Dude I really don't doubt his arm strength, he can spin it. If what you said is accurate, no idea on that one.

Scrimmage notes from Woelk:

Big plays from the defense included an Isaiah Oliver interception on a tipped ball, sacks from Drew Lewis and Dante Sparaco, a big fourth-down stop from safety Evan Worthington and some nice plays from young linebackers Carson Wells, Jonathan Van Diest and Akil Jones.

Offensively, Bryce Bobo had a pair of big catches, both on throws from Steven Montez; and running backs Michael Adkins and Alex Fontenot both broke nice runs. Also coming up with nice catches were wideouts Devin Ross, K.D. Nixon and Laviska Shenault.

MacIntyre also singled out the play of redshirt freshman cornerback Trey Ufoffia, and also praised the kicking game.
