Official 2017 Coaching Carousel Thread - Zona hires Sumlin

Vegas now has Frost as even money to be Florida’s next HC fwiw.
Going to be interesting. He seems a little green to be taking over such a big job (he is a stud though, not trying to say he can't do well) so I wonder if he will keep a guy like Randy Shannon on staff or if they will go after an experienced guy like Leavitt to take over the defense. It would be awesome to see an attacking Florida offense again though.

Another potential G5 Coach to consider is Rod Carey at Northern Illinois. Not sure he has the connections throughout the whole country, and especially Texas, but his is a very solid coach, runs a high speed offense, and we know he can beat Nebraska!!!

So, what's driving this:
a. the basketball shoe company federal investigation
b. the football team's performance
c. all of the above

I would normally go with c., but I think a. is probably driving this a lot more than any other factor.

A might actually be the current Title IX investigation into the women's softball program.

The now former softball coach hired his sons as assistant coaches. One of those sons apparently had several inappropriate contacts with members of the team. Senior members of the AD were made aware of allegations and promptly tried to deflect them. The assistant in question abruptly resigned several months ago under false pretenses given to the media. Former player filed a suit this summer. Coach was given a contract extension sometime in the middle of these events. Coach ultimately resigns in late August.

So the coach's son was shagging more than balls in the outfield?

So, let's say you were a DC or OC that really, really wanted to be a head coach. Let's also say you were old, and you knew that opportunities to move up, especially to a P5 gig, were going to be rare.

How much of a discounted salary would you be willing to accept in order to have the opportunity?

That's the general question.

The specific question: if you're Jim Leavitt, and Oregon State says "our budget for head coach is $2.7 million/year, your buyout is $500k, we'll pay your buyout, and give you $2.2 million in year one, and $2.7 for the next two."

Do you take it?

Why wouldn’t you? Especially JL making $1 mil jumping to $2.2 then $2.7 and if expectations are exceeded you get a huge guaranteed contract with a big buy out.

If you flame out you go back to being a decently compensated DC after taking a vacation year.

Yeah, that's where I'm at too.

Some Oregon State, KU or NU level school is going to give him a contract, if not this year, then next for sure.

I feel like he’d fit right in at Nebraska.
I hate how successful I think he would be at NU. Granted, I don't think he could polish that turd enough to get another natty for them, but I think he could have KjSU crypt keeper level of success.

Does he have a buyout for HC jobs? Most coordinators don't

His buyout this year is 500k. Period. HC, coordinator, doesn't matter. Next year it goes to 250.

Unless it's KjSU, then the buyout is $0.
Looks like there will be a lot of jobs open this year. I expect he'll land one.

Yeah, I think so too. Especially because I think he'll accept a slightly below market salary just for the opportunity.

He won't. Only hope is Ole Miss deciding they want him.....which is a viable possibility. Matt Luke has done an OK job to get them to 4-5, but they need to clean house.
Ole Miss is about the only job MikMac may be offered and take, but still a longshot.

I think he'll try and get his name in a number of searches.......He seems to sense that we're frustrated with him as fans, and the shine he had on him at this point last year is now gone.

Reset:

Open jobs:

Florida- Jim McElwain out. Randy Shannon takes over as interim HC. Some say some say Mullen, some say Frost
Ga. Southern- Tyson Summers out.
Ole Miss- Hugh Freeze out.
Oregon St.- Gary Anderson out.
UTEP- Kugler out, Mike Price in for a repeat.

I really thought someone would get the axe this week, probably Food Cart or Sumlin, with another loss, but the carousel remains slow.

Early list of probables:

Tennessee- Food Cart all but gone. Jon Gruden, the perpetual UT candidate in the wings, along with a host of other hopefuls await.
KU- Beaty loses the race of the cripples to winless bailer, boy do I like the sound of winless bailer. I guess I can't say that anymore.
NU- Riley coordinates a loss to perennial powerhouse Northwestern, at home, no less...he's a goner. AD Eichhorst already shown the barn door.
TT- Kliffy K could be gone.
Arky- Bielema manages an epic job saving come from behind victory, which would be the case if Coastal Carolina wasn't the opponent.
aTm- Sumlin most likely gone.
Auburn- Malzahn helps his cause, and worsens Sumlins' with a beatdown of the Aggies.
Mizzou- Barry Odom has not done well, but lit up UF, maybe he stays?
fUCLA- in honor of ahoelsken, Mora continues to do less with more.

RichRod and TG off any possible hot seat. They should send the Buffs a Christmas card.
