Official CU vs. Kansas Game Thread 11/23/24

@hokiehead probably gonna watch the game on dvr on Thanksgiving and bump this thread so we can enjoy it all over again
Close. Just finished it. Watched first half, went to the DU hockey game and then tried to finish when I got home but fell asleep early in the 4th.

The CU loss sucked, but I'll take another victory for the "don't let the networks dictate my personal life schedule" movement!

RE: "watch on Thanksgiving" - hyperbole noted - going a day without having a game spoiled is usually NBD, but NASCAR is the only sport I can wait longer than a day without learning the end.

Thanks for thinking of me.

Idk what I can say about the game that hasn't been said here already. Really tough loss. I felt dread about this one all season and knew KU is a hell of a lot better than their record indicated. They are a good team with tons of experience and it showed for all 4 quarters yesterday.

The game being at Arrowhead was atrocious. What an absolute dump. A pile of ketchup and mustard splattered concrete in the middle of a DIA-sized parking lot. That place had absolutely no aura yesterday. Like 10% of the crowd was there in chiefs gear, for ****s sake. There seemed to be more concern about taking **** on the broncos and following the husker game than the actual game happening in front of their faces. 0/10 game day experience. I've had better times in Lincoln.

The only real positive I draw from it is that Hunter should maintain his Heisman lead.

We've had a great season and it still isn't over.

So SMU and Miami should both get in because they are damn good, and of course Ohio State, Oregon, Texas, Georgia, ND, Tennessee, and a couple others also deserve to get in, but 12 teams is too much?

The 12 team playoff is great. It makes for an entire season of very meaningful games even if a team loses a couple along the way.

It is also creating parity since elite recruits don’t have to choose one of five programs who have a legitimate shot at the playoff.

Florida State probably wouldn't have competed last year, but they deserved a chance to have that proven on a field.

Georgia probably deserved a shot to extend their reign last year.

Sure, this year a team like Boise and a 3 loss SEC team will get a spot that isn't really deserved, but IMHO that's far preferable to leaving an obviously deserving team out in the cold.

The champs will have to win 3 or 4 consecutive quality games. This is so much better, in so many ways.

Yeah I don’t know how anyone could watch this year and think they 12 is somehow too many?

The holds were obvious, but they let them play on both sides of the ball. This, however, is another egregious miss

Half the explosives had a major hold from Kansas. There was a vicious hold on Mckinney on one of the big plays for Kansas. The refs wasn't calling nothing for Kansas. It was clear Vegas did what they needed to do against CU. Too much risk with Colorado

If there's one thing Big 12 refs have been consistent on, is not calling obvious holds. Its been happening all season.

I think it hurt not having Hodge yesterday.
Without a doubt.

KU scored every time they had the ball during meaningful minutes, but the game still wasn't a blowout. We get just one stop turned in our favor, and we have a great shot of taking it down to the wire at least. Hodge certainly could have contributed enough to make that happen.

Our run defense is so hard for me to understand. It felt like our biggest strength last week, but this week it was our biggest weakness. Is it from not being able to make things up strategically when we also have to factor in guarding against a mobile qb? We've shut down plenty of great running backs this season. It was just really odd to see us look like the less physical team yesterday, but I suppose it has happened that way in all three of our losses.

I have a hard time blaming Stoudmire when it was the first time all season he didn’t play well.

A lot of guys didn’t play well; pretty much the entire front seven. Hodge maybe plays those out routes a bit better, but he wouldn’t have made a difference where they hurt us the most. Running it down our throats.

They are a much more complete football team than us, they can run the ball when it matters. We can't.

Did ref suck? Yes. Did missing Preston hurt? Yes. Would we still lose without these factors? I fully believe so.

I think this is a good result for us in the long term. CP has to understand the value of the running game better now, because this loss must be painful to him.

I’m reading the tiebreaker PDF form the conference. So dumb. I would like it to be performance based instead of matchups dependent.

1) points against
2) points for
3) turnover differential?

Maybe head to head in a two way tie is reasonable.

I have not watched the game on TV yet, just leaving KC airport. I can't comment on the refs, since I have not watched it. They seemed to be letting the teams play for the most part. The horse collar calls were both bad.

Being there in person, CSC's missed tackle on their 1st series set the tone a bit. CSC has been solid in the open field, either getting a big enough piece or making the play-maker go into other defenders/sideline. I thought KU's OC called a great game keeping our D off balance all game. I think our D tried different things, however KU did a great job mixing it up/adjusting exploiting every gap on the defensive front--they ran every gap on both sides, from the inside to the sideline. When we stacked the box, Daniels either completed passes or scrambled. KU played a clean well-coached game without turnovers or busted assignments. Dual-threat QBs have been a tougher task for our D and it showed. Neal had an awesome game but Morrison and Daniels did their damage with another hundred yards rushing.

Allowing KU's last drive of the 1st half for a FG hurt. It felt like CU was building momentum and would get a stop. When we came out of the half scoring immediately, I still thought that CU was coming on. Looking back, things might have been different if was 21-20 CU. However, I had a feeling that our Dline depth would just start getting home as KU's Oline tired + our adjustments. Also, a bunch of it felt like waiting for a turnover--fumble/INT. This never materialized. IMO, our D was not as physical as in recent games--that could be a lull, being off balance, or not getting clean hits/tackles.

I'll be glad to get home.

Run defense is much more effective when defenders are running forward.

Recent games we had control of the LOS and our defenders were running to the ball.

Yesterday KU's OL was pushing us back, their runner including Neil and Daniels had space to generate forward moment and our defenders often were stationary or even moving backwards on contact. When the runner is strong like Neil is that's a bad combination because his momentum will carry him forward for yardage, and sometimes right through the tackle.

KU had a lot of 5-7 yard runs which meant that the defense was left defending a lot of options, and in general did a poor job of it.

When KU gets in trouble is with 2nd or 3rd and long forcing them to go downfield. This is when they tend to have a low percentage of success and turn the ball over. We didn't turn them over yesterday and they controlled the clock and field position all game.
