Official CU vs. Kansas Game Thread 11/23/24

I have a hard time blaming Stoudmire when it was the first time all season he didn’t play well.

A lot of guys didn’t play well; pretty much the entire front seven. Hodge maybe plays those out routes a bit better, but he wouldn’t have made a difference where they hurt us the most. Running it down our throats.

I think Hodge tackles well. That is why I made that comment.

There was a long run or screen pass down the left side of the field. Stoutmire was engaged with a WR, and it looked like he didn't make much of an effort to disengage from the block. Meanwhile, Bean gained another 20 yards.

The game can not be blamed on bad play on any one player.

The team as a whole played like ass. Our defense looked like they regressed back to week 1 and our offense never got into a rhythm. Poor play calling, no run game, blah blah blah.

It just looked like we weren't ready to play, and Kansas was very ready. Blame the whole coaching staff if anyone.

When we screen, why doesn’t Shedeur snap off those throws quicker? He fully receives the snap, turns, throws the ball, and the most of the time our guys are getting bum rushed. Just seems mechanically clunky

He got long ass arms. 6'8 wingspan. That's why he's able to make some crazy ass throws on the deep balls and even intermediate throws but his behind LOS throws are inconsistent. Trevor Lawrence is another with a long WS and he also has that issue.

Mahomes, Nix, and others are able to make super fast throws on screens, and I thought I saw Shedeur throwing in the summer with much quicker short wide throws, but recently, our outside short game is brutally slow and ineffective.

Shurmur's offense is so pedestrian in my opinion when looking at all the tools that offenses have in terms of resets, motion, and other strategies.

The Raiders had a really nice 3 man pattern that freed the short man up quickly on a dig, and our patterns are sloppy and long

I still can't believe how bad our tackling was especially since the dline and linebackers have played so well the past few games. It reached a point in the 3rd where I had zero confidence that we would get a stop. Unfortunately that proved out to be true
Gotta give their guys credit. They ran with purpose. Our guys didn’t seem to want to be there.

Nix probably got the best short passing game of any prospect since Brees. None sure you are going to find better. Pat scheme reminds me of Boise OC, Dirk Koetter scheme. A lot of matchup options and a some bail out options with the TE and RB. We are a tad deficient with some of the talented needed outside of WR.

Overall, I call the season a success.

I said less than 7 wins would be a coaching failure, at the same time I really doubted we would see more than 9 wins. We are right in that sweet spot and can end with 9 wins with a win this Friday. Given CU was 4-8 last year, that is pretty good.

Still, CU had the table set to make a run to the CCG on their own terms and chose to take a huge crap on the holiday Turkey instead. Now they have to rely on others to put them in the CCG. It is even more upsetting when you see a group of talented DB's simply refuse to wrap up, and watch #4 (a very good player BTW), bounce off the wussy shoulder nudges the CU DB's tried to pass off as tackling efforts. It amazes me the coaches let that crap go on.

SS2 and TH had their customary unbelievable games. Poor technique and lack of composure (DJ McKinney this week) separate a very good CU FB team from being elite.

Does Shurmur not believe in formation resets, motions (fly or orbit), and are his route concepts good?

I do not see any of those things in any level of creativity or consistency. Is that Prime and Shedeur having input?

They seem to love long routes and giving Shedeur full read ability

The ONLY way that works is if you have the absolute best Offensive Line of all time that can hold up against anyone.

They also love 4 wide simply because they started the season with 4 great WR's and so in theory let's only put our best players out there because Shedeur and his receivers are all we got.

Watching Juju's game on Friday, I saw more creativity than our offense, and I am trying to think of which game we were the most creative in.

Crazy thing is that Shedeur has great stats and was very effective all season, so really cannot fully dog the heck out of it, but what if a more balanced and creative offense was ran. Why not just copy the Broncos, 49ers, or Dolphins playbook and run that stuff, because what we run just appeared to be only our little concoction.

When the time of possession disparity is 2 to 1 (40 to 20) it’s kind of hard to put a ton of points up.
The offense had a few chances in the 2nd half but failed to do anything outside of the first drive. Defense put them in a big hole, the offense didn't do much to get out of it.

The standard down (1st/2nd down) success rate was very good in the first half (56%/67%) but was terrible in tht 2nd half (20/30%). There's too much talent on offense to have those results.

I like his offense. He's kinda dealing with some talent issues that make it difficult to have a full install. Overall, I like his concepts and they translate well to the pros which is critical for anyone who wants to play in the NFL at QB.

Juju team isn't lacking anything at their level of play. Carrollton is stacked even by Metro Atlanta standards. Most of that offense is D1 recruits.

A Big talented TE is so important, so are a few taller receivers, like a TMac type, cause we got a few really stud small jitterbugs coming in

OL will and can fix everything.

I am not sure he is fully in charge of the overall game plan in terms of how he is trying to stack plays on top of each other to figure out what works and to setup future good plays. Those sideline discussions are a lot of sandlot discussions about small moments of coverages or pass rush and not really looking at the much bigger picture about how one run play did this and so lets keep running it or whatever things build on top of another.

I thought CU had D1 players. Who knew?

It's a lot different when you are a P4 program trying to win a natty. Smalls is a good TE for Jackson State but isn't good enough for this level as a TE. There are levels and you have to have the ability, instincts, size, talent, and coachablity to a certain degree.

Not to be too critical but this year the Buffs have been a “basketball on grass” outfit rather than a complete offense. It has worked enough times to make ourselves feel pretty good. Our run defense is predictably abysmal in games since we obviously don’t practice much against the run.

The B12 is weird and we bought into it. The first B12 team that has a consistently stout balanced offense and a quality defense can dominate this rag tag pirate conference. Let’s be that team.

I think our competition long term will be the Kansas schools and ISU. That’s where it appears the other good coaches are.

An 85.5 run grade per PFF is not abysmal

I watched the Shedeur Sanders hey multiple times in slow motion and I can't believe the refs totally blew that call. A few seconds after Shedeur thew the ball and the Kansas defender went helmet first into his knee, he was totally flashing a peace sign. I can't believe the refs didn't even notice it, that kind of stuff can ruin the game.
