Sandusky update (more evidence against Joe P)

I'm not seeing any scholarship reductions. Good. The NCAA should never use that penalty. All it does is give a boost to the school's recruiting.

$60m fine, 4 season postseason ban, vacates all wins 1998-2011, no word on schollies yet, 5 year probation

20 scholly total, 10 annual reduction - means they can only have 65 total scholarship players and sign 15 per year

Outside of the fine just a longer version of USC's penalties. What PSU did was several orders of magnitude worse that what Reggie Bush and USC did. ****ing weak.

Outside of the Sixty Million Dollar fine. (That's roughly 42 one-off road games at OSU or Michigan). Yeah, you're right. No big difference.

I would suspect some will, 4 years could turn into a decade without a bowl. It worse than I thought theyd give them.

Vacated wins from 1998-2011, so does that mean Joe Paterno, patron saint of pedophile DC's, is no longer the winningest CFB coach? Viva Bobby Bowden dadgummit!

Look again.

Damn.

Maybe coupled with a 4 year post-season ban the scholarship reduction will have the desired impact.

But historically all reductions have done is make a scholarship offer from the school more desirable to a recruit (i.e., "They have so few spots in this class and they are making me their top priority. I better commit fast before they move on.") This is statistically proven over a bunch of cases, but people don't need to look any farther than USC to see how much scholarship reductions help recruiting performance.

FWIW, Paterno is no longer in the top 10 of all time winning college football coaches

I'm starting to think this is going to hurt CU in a weird round-about way.

The anti-athletic people will use this situation to their advantage. Even though we did not have any part in this.

Technically.

I think "vacated wins" is the stupidest thing ever, though. I think it's insulting to the players more than anything. And it accomplishes nothing.

The difference from the Usc situation is their guys coming in would still get a shot at bowl and a title. The guys coming into Penn St wont get that chance, id say alot will never come. Id hate to be Obrien.

My response to them would be: "I agree. If any of the athletic programs tries to cover up child rape, the university shouldn't assist. How often does something like this happen?"

Agree in principle, but in this case I think this was a shot aimed directly at that arrogant prick Paterno (if this does mean he loses the title of all time winningest coach) and I think it needed to be done if for this reason alone.

Im surprised some of you dont think this is a big punishment. PSU isnt USC. I except the schollie reductions and bowl ban to cripple them for the forseable future.

Exactly. That 4-year postseason ban is the killer in this thing. Anything beyond 1 year and it's a HUGE hit. This will be hard for Penn State to recover from.

Honestly, if I'm Penn State the scholarship reduction doesn't concern me much.

I get what you're saying but these people aren't exactly reasonable.

I agree, they are pretty bad. I expected along the lines of USC. Had they suspended the program plus this, they wouldnt get off the mat for awhile, may not anyway.

10 Schollies this year, 20 Schollies for the 4 years after.... I think that will be enough to cripple the program and discount the advantage the limits do give.

You're right about PSU not being USC. USC doesn't have a stadium that size, CA isn't as football-crazed as provincial or as blindly loyal as PA, and it can't match PSU having the largest alumni association of any US university.

People will be shocked at just how well PSU football weathers this storm. It is a massive punishment, though.

If they are not capable of higher order reasoning, they have no business teaching students on a college campus and the university should have no desire to have its name associated with anything they publish.

This. My hunch is PSU will never drop to less than 5 wins, and 6 years from now they'll be a 7-5 or 8-4 type of team.

It honestly doesn´t concern you that you were just effectively stripped of a third of your depth?

Not really. NFL rosters are 53 people and they've got a longer season.

It's the post-season ban that matters.

So in the end, the Paterno/Bowden battle for all-time wins leader came down to who had fewer vacated wins. ... College sports!
