The 2021-2022 Coaching Carousel

The day the Assistant Coaches Died Update

Open jobs:

Akron- Tim Arth out, (h/t DeNiro) 3-24 overall, replaced on an interim basis by Oscar Rodriguez.

TCU- Gary Patterson gets the heave ho. (h/t BCS and Duff). Rumors abound TCU may do a coaching drive by on SMU and snatch up Sonny Dykes. (h/t ahoelsken) Jerry Kill to take over in the interim. (H/t DeNiro)

WSU- Nick Rolovich fired for cause over vaccination status. (h/t BCS) Bringing out some of the best recriminations between the antivaxxers and branch covidians yet.

Ohio- Frank Solich retires at the end of the year after 16 successful years as the Bobcat HC. (h/t Deniro) Health related retirement. Good for him to leave on his own terms.

UCONN- Randy Edsall, formerly a hot prospect, has taken UCONN to depths of despair not previously known. Losses to FCS Holy Cross, and two shutouts against Purdue and Fresno St. sealed his fate. Six wins in his four years as HC of UCONN, 2.0. Ouch. (h/t Deniro) Who is the next person up? Don't know, but Joe Moorhead has been mentioned, I kind of will believe that when I see it.

USC- The big one. (h/t Deniro, also check Jens' USC Fires Clay Helton megathread). Mike Bohn is on the clock. My guess is Fickell, and then Franklin, in that order. UPDATE- Apparently, Mike Tomlin is not interested (h/t AlbasterYak)

FIU- Butch Davis is a gonna hang it up at the end of the year and retire.

LSU- Ed O out. (h/t Carolina Buff), apparently when Ed O isn't covering up sexual assaults and turning in unsatisfactory W-L records, he is propositioning random women at gas stations, unfortunately, the last lady of the pump was an LSU muckety-muck's wife. (h/t 14er). Who's gonna be? Melvin? Dave Aranda? Jakes Franklin? Joe Brady? Billy Napier? Ed O's buyout is $17M (h/t Creebuzz), about a dollar more than luminaries like HCKD. I would say Ed O will retire and go into broadcasting, but.....

UMASS- Fires their HC, (h/t BCS) Walt Bell out. (h/t DeNiro)

Filled Jobs:

Ohio- Tim Albin gets the job (h/t ahoelsken).

Georgia Southern- Bold move and hired Clay Helton (h/t Alabaster Yak)

Texas Tech- Bailer AHC and LB coach Joey McGuire hired (h/t DeNiro)

Possibles:

UW- Jimmy Lake goes full Woody Hayes on player, could get the hook, suspended for the ASU game (h/t DeNiro). OC John Donovon canned (h/t Serenity)

ASU- Herm Edwards has some pretty flagrant stuff hanging over his head, hard to believe it doesn't cost him.

N. Texas- Seth Littrell siting at about .500

UNLV- Arroyo 0-12. (h/t ahoelsken)

kNU- Frosty probably done before the end of the year according to Steve Sipple. UPDATE: Not so fast my friend, trev Alberts restructures Frosty's contract and announces he will be back for 2022 (h/t DeNiro) OC Matt Lubick, OL Greg Austin, RB Ryan Held, and QB Mario Verduzco sacrificed that Frosty may coach another day. No word on if Herbie has been put on an ice floe.

VT- Hokie has consulted the VT burrito stand and Fuente may be out (h/t Hokie).

fUCLA- Chip Kelly may have worn out his welcome in Westwood. (h/t AlbasterYak).

Florida- Dan Mullen struggling (h/t Duff) UPDATE: DC Todd Grantham and OL John Hevesey scapegoated by Mullen (h/t Serenity)

Other news:

Oregon St.- DC Tim Tibesar fired for failing to adequately defend the Beaver. (h/t DeNiro)

Urban Meyer- Gets his freak on after visiting the grand kids.

Mizzou- fires DL coach midseason, an impossibility I am told. (h/t Deniro)

Okie Lite- Gundy leverages a perpetual extension (h/t AlbasterYak)

James Franklin- Switches agent to Jimmy Sexton for moving and or pay raise negotiations (h/t nik)

CU OL- Coach Rod fired, now embarking on second career in ebay sales.

UT- Jeff Banks dispatching his stripper GF and her monkey on the recruiting trail (h/t Jens)

Minny- PJ Fleck gets a bigger boat to row with an extension and raise (h/t Albaster yak) UPDATE: PJ Fleck's contract is upped to $5Million, 7 years. (h/t DeNiro)

If Frosty were a disaster in year two, the bugeater faithful would get the money together to can him.
They went 5-7 in his second year (which included getting nuked by Ohio State on national TV, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory here, losing by 27 to Minnesota, and a 16 point loss to Wisconsin) and he's still there. Stop trying to hold that ****ing athletic department up as the model here. It isn't the same situation. If you're a hot coordinator like Dan Lanning, why would you want that job right now? Same question if you're a hot name from the Group of 5 like Napier. Their fans suck. They're making excuses for their patience with Frosty because they have to-they know they're staying irrelevant if Fusker Jesus can't figure it out.

You are correct that Nebraska isn't the job it once was and the job many of them still think it is.

Keep in mind that the only reason they get Frost (who was the hot candidate to get a top level P5 job after what he did at G5) is because of his history as a Husker.

Prior to that they hired Mike Riley after being rejected by their top few candidates, before that Pelini was again a guy with Nebraska links and a guy who didn't have other top P5 prospects but was available after some other offers were declined.

When they hired Callahan they also had to resort to a guy who didn't have a lot of other prospects as a head coach.

Other than maybe some individuals who had played there they aren't getting top coaching prospects who are interested in the job. It is seen as a tough job career wise because they are short of being able to compete with multiple teams in their conference and because continued insistence on doing things "the husker way" leaves coaches not able to have full control over their programs and seeing a place with unrealistic expectations.

Frost so far has been an abject failure but before they fire him they have to honestly ask themselves who they can get to replace him and that answer isn't what they want to admit.

Callahan and Pelini had options.

Callahan and Pelini had options.
Not top flight ones.

Neither was going to get a job with a perennial top 25 type program. Callahan had been a pro guy but his last year with the Raiders, not only on field but off, had taken that option off the table.

Pelini as well was not considered at top tier candidate and he already had some baggage that he carried.

Both could have gotten good G5 jobs or lower end P5 jobs but neither was the level candidate that matched what Nebraska imagined itself to be as a program.

Wilcox would definitely give the Huskies what they've been lacking: a top notch offense

LOL HOOK 'EM!!!!

Maybe the problem isn’t the coaches so much as the school itself.

Seriously, though. It does really make one stop to think about what a good job Mack Brown did there.

In the 15 years before he got to Texas: 0 top ten finishes, 2 10+ win seasons, 7 bowl games
In his 16 seasons at Texas: 6 top 10 finishes (including a Natty), 9 10+ win seasons, 15 bowl games.
In the 7 seasons since: 1 top 10 finish, 1 10+ win season, and 5 bowl games.

For emphasis- UT has missed a bowl game more times in the 7 seasons since Mack Brown's been gone then he did in 16 seasons there.

I have heard from people close to the program that not only was Mack very good at running the football end of things he was much better than anyone they have had since at managing the boosters and all the other aspects that most other programs don't have to deal with to the same extent.

Mack was unique. In his prime he was a salesman. He knew how to schmooze the big cigars, and how to recruit talent to UT. He did it in his first stint at UNC. Dude can sell ( i.e. recruit). He was an just an above average FB coach. Witness his refusal to let Major Applewhite play instead of Chris Simms, or how long it took him to figure out he needed to let Vince Young just play, instead of trying to shoehorn him into the offense.

That being said, Mack was UT's Coach Mac. UT is not likely to do better. Give Sark time, though and they will be pretty good again. Problem is, they are now in the SEC. They can't just gear up for OU and aTm as their only real competition like the good ol' days.
