2018 NCAA tournament thread

11 of the 28 completed brackets in the AllBuffs pool don’t have their National Champion pick playing in round 2. Hahahahah.
Amazing.

We knew this could be a crazy year.

What goes beyond, though, is that these weren't just upsets. They were 20 point blowouts of UVA and Zona.

After watching Princeton lose to Georgetown on a phantom foul call in 1989, and thus just failing to become the first 16 seed to beat a #1 ... I fall asleep during a game and then wake up just in time to realize that I just missed an historic sports moment. My sports life sucks!!

Kenny Smith just made a great point. UMBC made UVA play their style, and UVA is completely unable to come out of their comfort zone.

I think all 11 are more than happy about this. Nobody really likes Arizona or Virginia, right?

Goose seemed to have a hard on for UVA. Maybe it was just some admiration though.

Tony Bennett was absolute class after that-that's a leader. Gave credit to UMBC, admitted his team got whooped, and talked about how you respond to adversity shows your character. If I had an 18 year old basketball player son, I'd want him to play for a man like that. That said, he's clearly gotta change his MO after this.....if they can't dictate the pace of play to their opponent they're an average basketball team. If I'm Pitt, I'm offering Ryan Odom whatever he wants to try and fix that thing.

The Virginia loss was easy to see coming. No firepower. Still surprising to see them be the 1st one seed to lose to a sixteen.

I heard UMBC's coach talk last week when I was watching something with their conference tournament. His strategy on how he built that program was on the Villanova model: recruit the most offensively skilled players you can and hope you can coach them to play defense.

While I think there's room for glue guys, perimeter stopper and rim protectors sprinkled into a roster so I'm not willing to go as far, I have to admit that in basketball great offense will usually beat great defense.
On SportsCenter this morning he said, roughly, 'honestly, it was our defense that gave us the chance to win'. most of his comments went to the defense too.

Makes sense. They bought in like crazy last night and that's the aspect he has to coach & re-enforce.

I think we can all acknowledge that UMBC played really well on the defensive end. I think we can also all acknowledge that what was unbelievable was that they shot about 70% in the 2nd half against one of the most elite defensive teams in modern college basketball.

Difference between the two I think. Arizona didn't show up. UVA ran into a team who shot the ball incredibly well (Bennett's style is vulnerable to that) and they panicked. Their defense got expanded, and UMBCs guards were athletic enough to make them pay for it

I'm enjoying watching it though.

Nantz, Raftery, and Hill are the only crew that don't make the game painful to hear.

(As soon as I write that, Grant Hill calls A&M "New Mexico" o_O)

I love Hill the player, and the man seems like a good person. However, he sucks as a commentator - so vanilla. And Nantz should only do golf...can't stand him as play by play in most sports. I like Raftery, but I can't stand this crew...have no idea how you like this trio.

To be fair though, Virginia is a terrible offensive team, and started to press quite a bit.

Admiration. Bennett’s a class guy and it’s nice to see them doing well.

And a damn good coach. If I have a second favorite ACC team, it's probably UVa.

Probably because of Raftery, lol.

My thing with Nantz is that he doesn't try to outdo the game or the analysts.

In 1987 my buddy had a bar in Idaho Springs. A bunch of us gathered to watch the Villanova/Georgetown final game there. An old miner was sitting at the end of the bar looking increasingly perplexed. Finally, he says "you know, I ain't been up to Georgetown in a long time, but I don't remember all them big... guys...up there".

We laughed.
