Bowl Games (other than ours) and associated silliness 2024 Plus the Playoffs

I do not know what's more boring these football games or the discussion about how the conference that plays 8 conference games should be rewarded for playing Mercer in November

SMU played Houston Christian
Indiana played Western Illinois
Ohio State played Akron, Western Michigan and Marshall
Boise played Portland State

Carry on though

Can we talk about data instead?

If you want. The field is set, the games are being played, and yet all the air is being taken up by SEC coaches and fans whining.

Honestly, if you were able to step back and look at it from a non-SEC fan perspective, you'd probably be embarrassed by the way you are all acting. Like as an entire segment of the country.

But you do have games like this year when ND lost to NIU as a letdown after the win at aTm. That aTm win is a lot more indicative of the team they have than the NIU loss. There are certain programs which we know have dudes everywhere, so even when they're having a down year a win or loss against them is meaningful - such as Texas winning at Michigan or taking care of Oklahoma in its rivalry game. Yeah, neither were great this year like they usually are but they were also good enough respectively to beat Ohio State and Alabama so those are much more impressive wins to me than beating a 7-5 Boston College like SMU did.
ND also boat raced everyone on the schedule after that NIU game.

Bama had those losses and struggled against other weak teams.

How do you envision the error bars on the statistics like SOR or a power ranking?

There's a lot of strong opinions on Bama being clearly better than Indiana based on something like Sagarin, which has them like 5 points apart. My gut, is that is that there's probably some overlap in 90% CI's and not a p < .1 or .05, but I've honestly never seen or heard any discussion of statistical error with these rankings.

I don’t really get the complaining. When it comes to the top 10-15 teams in the country, we see blowouts and non competitive games throughout the regular season. We’ve also seen plenty of blowouts in the 4 team CFP.

This playoff isn’t about having every game be some great matchup between two evenly matched teams. Texas, PSU and ND were supposed to beat the lower seeds handily, just like many top seeds do in the basketball tournament.

This format is also about the hype and the build up and “what if” scenarios for underdog programs. More meaningful games and gives non blue bloods a chance.

Maybe - I like 12.

I think if they go 16 or 24- like FCS - i think you'd have to get rid of Conference championship games. FCS plays an 11 game season and no conference championship games.

Playing 13 games before the playoffs start would be tough.

But as you mention it's about the $$
Crazy. Earlier I was assured that a 14 game season with a 16 team playoff would be awesome.

On a different note, I find it odd that ESPN sold these 2 afternoon games to TNT. One theory I saw is that as part of ESPN's deal for MNF and the playoff games that maybe they can't run college games opposite the NFL, which makes sense if true
I think ESPN was looking to recoup some of the ridiculous money they’re spending on this with a sub license.

Ooooh 9 conference games in the ACC!

And Indiana played 7 of the 8 bottom teams in the B1G

EDIT: ACC only played 8 conference games
Alabama played 3 G5/FCS teams and a bad Wisconsin team. SEC teams play fewer P4 games than other conferences. It makes a difference and has been the major reason that conference has built the illusion that it’s so tough top to bottom when in reality it’s always only had 2-3 great programs at any given time.

I also see the point where someone said that the BCS system was the best way but I was essentially over that one when the SEC found a way to get two teams into that one.

If you don’t even want the ACC champion in I assume you’d be fine with a true SEC and Big Ten invitational?
Oh no, the SEC people would then argue to not bother with the "lowly" B1G and just automatically give the crown to the SEC winner each year since really nobody else matters.

How many times did they manage to sneak Alabama either into the playoff or the championship game? Was it twice or three times?

Don’t underestimate the role that Fox has, btw. Fox being in bed and married to the Big Ten helps the conference preserve its interests and push its narratives. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the two conferences are essentially married to the two most important media stakeholders.
