Official 2020 Fall Camp Thread

Regardless of the uniqueness of this season, anyone suggesting Lewis start even if he's not ready is crazy. You want to completely ruin a kids future? Throw him in and get him killed and destroy his confidence.
I can somewhat agree. We really don't know if it would help Lewis or the program to start him right away or not. I think the big kicker here is no spring ball. If Lewis had spring ball, then I think we have a better idea of where he would be at. Ultimately, 90% of QB's at this level need at least some acclimation to the game and sometimes it does take time. Now saying that, if Lewis doesn't have packages, or at least get some run this year, then I think the questioning can most certainly happen.

Most of the frustration with the QB position revolves around really not knowing what we have with Lytle and Noyer. We kind of know what we have with Noyer, but have no idea with Lytle. The fact that neither got really any run except for in dire times, tells most that neither are good enough at this level, so we might as well go with the more heralded freshman.

I do not think going with Lewis right away is smart, but the news Noyer is looking like the starter for now tells me this staff is going to treat the QB position very conservatively.

If you start with the "experienced" 5th year senior, warts and all, it tells me he is going to be the guy for much of the season. You do not make that move and decide you need to see the other guys as well at some point. And if that happens, it will be the same **** going into next spring, where the coaches will inexplicably wonder aloud how they have a group of QBs with next to no experience, like clockwork.

I tend to agree and I took that ranking with grain of salt. I think given the number of upper classmen they will be better than last, but I'm not sure that they are good enough to protect an inexperienced QB, especially a True-Frosh.
It isn't going to matter who starts from a protection standpoint, the current O-line can run block with a semblance of consistency pass protection is another story.

his is Darrin Chiaverini's second go-round as the offensive coordinator and play-caller, and his comfort level appears to have grown, especially as he works closely with Dorrell and quarterbacks coach Danny Langsdorf.

With a new — and relatively inexperienced — starting quarterback, the Buffs likely won't put a ton of pressure on the QB, at least not right away. But they will utilize the talent they have in the backfield, at wide receiver and tight end. The Buffs have playmakers at every one of those spots, and CU will find ways to get them into space and give the quarterback a chance to succeed and gain confidence in the process.

Dink. Dunk. Screen pass. This offense is going to be FIRE. In positive news, it does look like the TE is going to be a thing. Let's hope.

Agreed, the Buffs establishing a running game will be key to any success. I think it is more important this year, as we project the defense may be better than in past years. CU is going to need to shorten games and I doubt (but it is not impossible) they will win any shootouts...

What I believe we'll see this shortened season: CU will finish in the upper half in rushing yards per game & in the lower half in passing yards. CU will be in the upper half of time of possession and rushing yards allowed per game.

I will give the BOTD to Dorrell making the decision to get all 3 QBs playing time this year, until proven otherwise. I don't expect an even share of snaps, of course, but I'm hopeful that it's a 60/30/10 split across the 7 games games. If Noyer is the starter, I'm hopeful there is some kind of QB move package to at least try to take advantage of his athleticism, that Lewis can also run.
:ROFLMAO:

The idea Chev is working closely with Dorrell and Langsdorf is so great.
If the idea is that Chev has full autonomy of the offensive scheme, design, play calling, etc. I'm wondering what KD's role and responsibilities are with this program? Is he just the in-game clock management specialist?

If the offense is being pared down, that does tend to add more ammunition to the crowd in favor of getting Lewis involved early. The nominal value of an upperclassman is their ability to digest and execute more of a complete college offense. If you intend to skinny down things, seems like Lewis would no longer be at as much of a disadvantage.

I mean, wasn’t it pretty much known/inevitable that Dorrell would be involved? I’d imagine Langsdorf will be as involved as Roper was back in 2018.

It would seem to imply Langsdorf has a lot of sway on QB personnel. Not great at all.

All I know is that the recent track records of Karl and Langsdorf don't exactly make me brim with confidence regarding Chev working closely with them. This may be a UBL of Duff.

My hope is they pick a staring QB (Noyer/Lytle) and go with them. Have a package for Lewis so he sees a handful of plays vs. UCLA and that number grows throughout the year. If he shows enough he takes over the whole thing. I'm not that concerned with Lytle and Noyer both getting playing time. One of them is going to win the competition and that is probably the end of the other at CU past this year.

The schedule sets up for potentially a decent start but if we lose the first 2 or 3 games I think you give the keys to Lewis if he is capable.

lewis should be named the starter. This year doesn't count anyway. Might as well see what he can do. Probably going to lead to some players transferring but it will be good foundation work for next spring and fall. The reality is Lewis is the long term solution for the Buffs. Play him, let him swim. Run the ball and gradually expand the play book for him. Play all of the freshmen as much as possible. I would name Christian Gonzales the starter at corner. All of the freshmen that are close to be ready should see the field.

From the media interviews I have watched with Langsdorf it seems like they went into Fall camp having decided against giving Lewis a shot at starting since we had a limited number of snaps and Lewis didn't get spring ball. While I understand it would be nice if they had at least given him some more run than it seems like they have so he could potentially jump in later in the season. Every time a media member asks about Lewis his answer is some version of "he looks good in the snaps he is getting but we just don't have that many snaps with trying to determine who is the starter" (between Noyer/Lytle).

Herm Edwards threw a toothpick to the wolves last year, far from perfect but did show his potential.

I don't think Langsdorf is the right fit at QB coach for a player like Lewis.

I don’t really think so. Noyer looked like the best quarterback. Are you saying landsdorf has more influence on the style of offense because that is where I can see issues and the main reasoning why lewis isn’t the starter.

I would interject this, we all dream of building pipelines to elite high school programs. Last season we had 3 players from DeSoto 2 current and DeSoto is currently ranked #3 I don't see any offers. If there was ever a season custom made to get these highly recruited players on the field it's this one.
CU has a marked advantage in recruiting TX over all of the P12, The Colony & DeSoto are major hits in recruiting. One thing I can tell you first hand, Texans love seeing Texas kids play outside of Texas.

Time to update the brick walk.

Understand your point, and your concerns may even be well founded. However, we have known about their track records since they were hire and should reasonably have expected Dorrell (and to a lesser degree, Langsdorf) would have a hand in helping a relatively inexperienced coordinator in Chev. I will say, what you predict to be a dink, dunk, screen-heavy offense, sounds eerily reminiscent to what Chev did in his first stint as OC, and less like a new system being imposed on Chev.

Offense SP plus ranking last season ended up at 51. I'm taking the under (worse) there this year. Defense was 105. I will take the over. Looks like both will be easy hits.
