Official 2025 Opening Week - Georgia Tech Thread

Georgia Tech is a good football team. Personally, I think they are the toughest opponent on our schedule, followed by Iowa State and Kansas State.

I’m not all doom and gloom. On offense, there are things to build on. The offensive line and running game looked improved. Salter had a tough game, as other noted, but one game does not a season make.

Defense was disappointing early, despite the turnovers, but they did settle down in the second half. Haynes King was clutch in the end.

All the season goals are still ahead for this team.

I can still see wins coming up against Delaware, Wyoming and Houston.
Do that and I'll be good with a 3-1 record going into Big12 play.
Maybe I'm settling, but a 7 win season
as a bridge to the JuJu era, wouldn't be horrible.
If Salter plays like he did yesterday, Houston will beat us.

Almost 100% agree here, but I think GT is not quite on the level of SMU, Miami, and Louisville, but could knock off one of them.
I disagree with this statement. I think they are as good as good as SMU. Better than Louisville. Not sure if they will be as good as Miami as Miami could end up being great long term this year.

Same. Except I think Arizona State will be the best team on our schedule after GT. GT looked as they expected themselves to look, very good and they had questions on their center first start and boy! Gary Barnett said he watched the film and GT had SEC speed on defense. I don't see any team as fast as us in the Big XII and GT defense was faster than ours. If we being honest, Big XII or G5s might not deserve to to be in the playoffs. Sorry Tulane. I forgot you replaced Mensah.

I watched Iowa State and KSU game and didn't think they were better than us. Good teams, nothing special or very good.

I watched Baylor game this morning, thought they looked good as well. Auburn just looks very good this year.

Texas Tech is the team i am intrigued by. Could they be the difference.

I just can't understand if you guys don't see the much improved offensive style last night.

Put SS back to this year's team and this style would be gone.

It's just wishful thinking to say SS would have won the game last night.

I want to play a style of ball that wins championships, and it is a balanced system that has running and passing in equal parts, and they both become successful because the concepts compliment each other.

We are currently going from one extreme to another and the commonality of why they both LOOK like crap is that Shurmur is in charge of creating them.

In the SS system, it would require good route concepts and other features to help SS, but we saw hero ball all the time, instead of even an effort to show balance.

In this Salter system, they say they want to run, but it is still shotgun handoffs and abandoning the run when it is successful.

Neither had creativity, neither used plays to set up future concepts that would confuse the opponent, neither had really really snazzy plays where you went, damn that was cool.

For a guy in football this long to be so basic and plain and terrible at calling plays, it is amazing that we are all not just calling it what it is

I was and am SUPER EXCITED about this team because the weapons are even more diverse than last year and watching how terrible they are being used, and how poorly Salter fits into whatever system we are playing is brutal.

Pistol concepts with real play fakes?
Under Center with stretch play fakes into play action throws??
Misdirection with creating flow to one side and then a reverse using our magic playmakers???
Anything at all down the middle????

This Shedeur hate is getting idiotic. We didnt play a lot of hero ball with Shedeur. We barely played hero ball with Shedeur. Usually he had to do everything in those cases and it was when everything went bad. Nebraska 2024, Oregon, BYU, and the one game we won, Baylor. Let's stop this bull**** narrative because of one bad preseason game which he was setup to fail

Yeah we’d be lucky to make a bowl game

10 million dollars for this ****, every coach who makes 10 million dollars makes the CFB playoffs. This team isn’t even close to being in the upper quartile of the big 12. So pathetic, I could tell Deion for free Shurmur sucks and how to manage the clock. And salter should be done. So pathetic, see you all next year

This is just downright cope. The people like you saying GT is a contender for the ACC just have no football knowledge. Put the bong down man they’re a fringe bowl team who will have a negative W-L conference record
Dude, you are lost. We will make a bowl game. GT is going to be in the hunt for the ACC championship. I think you’re the one without football knowledge if you don’t think they are a good team

I fully agree with this. It's like they finally have some sort of real offense but the system has nothing to do with the capability of the playmakers we have.

That's the most frustrating part
Salter should run the Darian Hagan 1990 offense as crazy as that sounds

I think the fact that the OL was solid and we ran the ball decent tells me that the option to go with Juju is very feasible

I am not going to agree with the personal attack on the guy but yeah. This is a bowl team, maybe a team that goes to Arlington for the Big XII championship game but that team is fighting for the playoffs legitimately.

I don’t have much to add that hasn’t been said already. Had to rewatch the game because I was ****faced by Q2 last night. A lot of overreactions in here. We’re not going to win 10 games but we will win 7/8. The defense will be better when we’re not playing a team with this style of offense, Faulkner is a really good OC. Salter will be better if he remembers his best strength is running the football. There were a few different times he could have taken off and continued a drive but decided to throw and missed. The offensive play calling wasn’t great but it wasn’t as horrific as people here were saying. Need fewer bubble screens for sure, but we weren’t as predictable as last year. He is still doing that thing where he has some drives where he will just only run it or only pass it and it kills the drive. End of the day, we lost by 7 to a team that will be competing for the ACC.

Lastly, the Mata hate is so forced lol. The XP attempt was tipped by a dude from the outside. Not Mata’s fault. He is a lock from 40 in.

Respectfully, he was not fine in my opinion.

He certainly wasn't great but showed his running ability, made some good throws and didn't turn the ball over, hence he was fine. The much bigger issue is the offense needs to be better designed for his strengths.

Run defense was subpar but GT has one of the better QB/RB running combos in the country and the D played better in the 2nd half.

Watching this Texas/tOSU game and I think it’s reasonable to give Salter a bit of a break for not being very sharp last night.

Granted, they are going against a great team, but everyone’s golden child, Arch Manning, looks quite bad with basically an NFL team around him and arguably the best offensive playcaller in the country as his HC.

It’s week one. Players and teams will get better.

Try this mental exercise. If GT and CU were to swap QBs, everything else being the same in that game including QB decision making, does GT still win? In other words, how much of the loss falls onto QB execution of the plays that happened in this game? I think GT would win by an even higher margin in that case. Two of the 3 GT TOs were King's fault. Salter on GT would have 1 TO on the bad snap, but that's it. I think Salter would have done a much better job executing the run heavy GT offense than CU's. On the CU side Salter missed some passes that King would have probably made? Maybe that would translate to points, but maybe King throws an interception. I don't think it was Salter's passing that killed us, it was the decision to pass. This loss was all about decision making and play calls, but especially decision making. Based on this one game, Salter is an above average runner, a below average - average passer and a way below average decision maker. I would think this is a lot more fixable than the pass protection and run blocking, which was actually the best we've had in a while. We could have actually called a lot more runs, unlike last year. Salter is pretty good evading the rush and getting out of the pocket. It's what he did after this that killed us. Run first + no passes more than 15 yards = win.

You're in Moab and wasting your time on that turd of a game?

I would like to watch the All 22 and see if there was a single thing that was good from our offense. Da Lama was even saying that the play calls were not even the best things that we were doing in camp, so I would like to see it from the angles they look at.

Can anyone explain how Shotgun Handoff Running is a good option at all? Unless you have the absolute best OL and RB, it always feels out of sync and does not really provide eye candy for the defense to be thrown off and fall for any kind of ball fake leading to play action.

Pistol is better, under center with really good play fake is even better

I joke about using the Darian Hagan type offense under center, but when we were running option, and Hagan would pull from center, roll or stretch the handoff to the right or left and instead of handoff, keep, or pitch, he would roll 2-3 steps and then just 3 to 5 step backpedal to a throw, it would really open up the field because the defenders had so much to think about instead of not falling for the shotgun handoffs.

Ohio State is running pro concepts right now under center

I am so pissed that the clock was so poorly managed that our Buffs ran out of time at the 50 with 2 TOs in the bank. That's amateurish and a complete failure.
His explanation was very worrisome. He was either trying to excuse his own ineptitude and not take accountability, or he was completely oblivious to what was happening on the field and with the clock. I’m not sure which one is worse…

I hate it so much because it gives a thread of legitimacy to the harsh criticism guys like Bud Elliot lob our direction.

He really needs someone on staff to help with the in game management. Analytics on when to go for it and when not to, clock management, timeout usage, etc. The fact Shurmur wasn’t screaming in the headset to call a timeout is also inexcusable.

Outside of a few bad decisions/passes by Salter and a couple bad penalties, last night’s loss is entirely on Prime, Shurmur and Livingston. Full stop.

So much easier to design an effective offense when Hunter, Horn and Weaver are blowing the top off of the secondary every play (or at least threatening to). This staff is going to have to adjust to not having that variable.

Also for our complaining Shedeur had elite accuracy. If the receiver was open he got a catchable ball.

Shotgun running worked really well for GT. Our offense needs to look more like Tech’s offense if Salter continues to start. More read option, RPO, motions with jet sweeps mixed in. But that type of playcalling doesn’t take advantage of our strength which are our WRs. So either start JuJu and run the same offense we did last night or keep Salter as the starter and totally revamp the play calling.

Yeah, unfortunately I think Prime is a negative asset on game day. We need a coaches coach, like the Broncos did for Hackett.

Clock management, I agree. But he's also an absolute genius savant on recognizing what the other team is doing and how it needs to be exploited. Very few HCs as capable as Prime with in-game adjustments he makes by getting in the ear of his coaches and players.
