Official 2025 Opening Week - Georgia Tech Thread

One thing that I think was a big improvement I haven’t seen talked about is special teams was much better. Kicking the ball out of the end zone was so great. Punt coverage was good and we made some decently long field goals. I think the team will be fine and will win most of their remaining games. Things were choppy at the beginning of the year last year as well. It’s the downside of a transfer portal team. We will see the upside in a few weeks.
Now do extra points.

For mother****ing ****’s sake!

Can someone compare this game to last year’s NDSU game? I feel like this GT team would have steam rolled NDSU, a team we narrowly escaped with a win…yet somehow we were, for intents and purposes, still in this game.

We did more zone coverage this game. But yes, the game content yesterday is actually better than the game against NDSU last year IMO. This GT team will absolutely kill the NDSU last year.

I know both OC and QB are disappointing to you guys last night, but this is the first game in 2 years that I feel like we have a normal looking offense.

In general, I have better feeling about this team than how I felt after first two games last year. Unfortunately, we don't have TH12 to bail us out most of the time.

It was not just about the time on the clock for the last 2 plays, its about having the time to catch your breath, talk to Salter, organize the WR’s, etc. Call the timeout, and know you at least have the right play called and everyone can run it. Big mistake, but CP is still the best possible coach for us. Shurmur has failed us

Anyone see Salter dancing to a hip hop song during the game, just moments before the play? That pissed me off.

I think Juju should play most of the Delaware game! The OL impressed me the most, and we can run the ball. Quick accurate passing would be effective.
That Salter moment killed it for me, given the Game situation at the time and how he’d played thus far. But, not surprised given what I’ve heard.

We struggled stopping the run-and that bit us last year. KU and KSU both got us because we couldn't stop either on the ground.

As far as next week......Salter should start. JuJu is still 17. In an ideal world, we jump on the fighting Blue Hens and JuJu plays most of the 2nd half.
I think we better get Juju some reps early, because likely we'll need him later.

Yes, among and amongst so many other plays. He doesn't have the head game, I've seen enough to not have him out there in the last two minutes ever (except for an absolute hail Mary for he does have the arm strength).

Other random notes:

Quency Wiggins seemed to play a lot and played well. If he emerges that will help
The edge group seemed to not be as active as last year. I feel like they were teeing off on the QB in ‘24.
Dekaylon is legit in the open field. He’s gonna break a couple long TD’s this year.
Atkins looked athletic at TE
Was it just me or were guys shying contact and running out of bounds early when they could have easily gained more yardage?

Yes DeKalon was impressive and he was picked as the breakout player on offense by both Adam and Howell

The #1 most crazy thing about yesterday was that we had ......... A REAL FREAKING OFFENSIVE LINE

The one thing that plagued us the past 10 years is now in good shape, and will get even better after the next 3 games

I am officially 100% Julian Lewis time. Our talent is in the WR room, and they were pissed off running ghost route after ghost route

Omarion getting 1 pass is criminal

Put in Juju for the next 3 games and let's see how it goes, because we can build around him and all the talent

Was there some questions about Chauncey Gooden? Was he not suited up?

Salter was fine and it wouldn't make sense to switch QBs after 1 game. Sure he forced some throws and had some overthrows but he didn't turn the ball over and has the experience, we just need to put more emphasis on his running ability with more designed options and QB runs. And if we get a big lead against Delaware then put Juju in and get him some experience.

I agree with others the OL is solid. Good to see. Pass rush is good on the DL. Run D and LB's on the D are simply awful.

Salter? He's a thrower, not a passer. Nobody is going to have the accuracy SS2 had, but the phrases "wing and a prayer", "sandlot" and "chuck it around" spring to mind. For a fifth year guy he has virtually no awareness of how to read the field in the pocket, just sling it. If he isn't going to run it, CU is hosed, because he isn't beating anybody with that arm. Poor accuracy, poor decisions.

So, I think you design 3-5 series with the ones for Lewis over the next two weeks and rotate JuJu and Salter to see what you have. Lewis is the future, but if Salter can't do any better than that, Lewis might have to be the present. Might as well see what he can do in live action now so you can bench Salter if you have to.

We are playing Delaware, Houston, and Wyoming!!!
The Delaware game can be his acclimation, you can have Salter as the backup if needed, but there is way too much potential with Juju to not just see how he does in that game, but of course, he would be running the garbage Shurmur offense, so who knows
As much as Coach Lewis started sucking as the 2023 season went along, his gameplan against TCU in that first game was fantastic, and that is why I have completely ended any hope for Shurmur in that he had all the time in the world to scheme against a GT team that you had film on, they played exactly the same way they played last year.

Lots of good points in this thread, also a lot of unfounded panic.

1. RG needs to pull his head out. Yes we make more money playing somebody good in the first game but when it sets our season back we lose more than we gain. There are some cases when being in a situation to gain the nation's attention helps but generally we should be like most power conference teams playing somebody who lets us get our legs under us. No pre-season games in college football and we played like a team that is full of transfers and new starters. We hate playing CSU but they give us a win while getting our act together.

2. The LBs deserve criticism but it is hard to play LB when the DL isn't providing much resistance. When the guards (including an all-American) are getting to the second level clean it's hard to look good.

3. The defense looked like guys weren't confident in each other. This gets worse against an unconventional offense like GT. Most defenses are built with the idea that the QB is going to be distributing the ball to the RBs and WRs. When the QB is the primary carrier of the ball it goes against defenders instincts. This is why Air Force causes so much trouble for teams even when those teams are more talented.

4. Salter wants to be an NFL QB, he isn't going to be. He doesn't need to be an extra (or primary) RB on the field like King was but he has to be better at choosing to pull the ball down, get the available yardage and get down or out of bounds. We had multiple drives last night that died on an incomplete pass that could have continued if Salter took the available yards on the run.

5. If Salter will make these runs his passing success will go way up. Part of the reason those running lanes were there is that GT was going max protect and dropping everyone into coverage. We didn't have wide open guys downfield and Salter isn't accurate enough to fit the ball into tight spaces. Pick up a few 1st downs running the ball and with the LBs and safeties thinking up there is more space to throw.

6. Shermer wasn't as bad as some here are saying but he does need do a better job of mixing in the run. We were having success on the ground then he would forget it and we got stopped.

7. We all want to see Juju. When a team loses a game the most popular guy in town is always the backup QB. I can respect the idea that Juju isn't ready and against a tought opponent they didn't have time to get him ready and break continuity. And by the way I absolutely hate, despise, the "We have to see what we have." argument. The QB or any other position isn't decided by a fan vote. The coaches have a pretty solid idea of what they have, they see every practice, every scrimmage, every film session. They don't need fan approval of their decisions.

Shurmur was awful, do not cover for him

Those Swing passes were figured out immediately by their corners and safeties and yet he went back to it over and over

He called 1 trick play and it was chaos

Yes, we were running the ball, but it was never used to set up real Play Action, which was what he was all about.

Just so depressing

I expected struggles on both sides of the ball as we're breaking in a lot of new starters. The things that upset me were:

1. Never attacking the second level of the defense. GT rarely had to turn their hips on defense. The few times we snuck Atkins out to the second level it was an easy completion for a chunk of yards.

2. A coach should have told Salter to use his legs when it was clear he was having accuracy issues. Pick up the third down however you can and keep the drive alive.

3. Too few touches for the Millers. If you have elite talent you have to get them the ball.

4. Our defensive game plan and lack of adjustments. Last year we got beat down by teams that wanted to pound the rock. Livingston has had a long time to figure this out but it just happened again. I don't understand why we stayed in a nickel defense all game. Maybe it's based on personnel (lack of functional line backers). Either way, when they run 80% of the time we should be trying to stop the run. Make them prove they can throw.
In addition to the formation that puts us at a disadvantage, our implementation of that formation put us at a further disadvantage.
Time and time again our edges got four yards deep in the backfield and effectively took themselves out of the play. We rarely ran zone so our dbs were no help in the run game.
You then have two undersized lbs that have to make play after play with a numbers disadvantage.

I think the team will improve a lot but this game was very winnable with better coaching.

Respectfully, he was not fine in my opinion.

I can still see wins coming up against Delaware, Wyoming and Houston.
Do that and I'll be good with a 3-1 record going into Big12 play.
Maybe I'm settling, but a 7 win season
as a bridge to the JuJu era, wouldn't be horrible.

Georgia Tech is a good football team. Personally, I think they are the toughest opponent on our schedule, followed by Iowa State and Kansas State.

I’m not all doom and gloom. On offense, there are things to build on. The offensive line and running game looked improved. Salter had a tough game, as other noted, but one game does not a season make.

Defense was disappointing early, despite the turnovers, but they did settle down in the second half. Haynes King was clutch in the end.

All the season goals are still ahead for this team.

This is the correct take. This year is the bridge year, any expectations higher than that is just wishful thinking.

And CP better figure out how to rebuild this DL and LB. Need major talent upgrade there, and a new coach

I’m not sure about the rest of you guys and gals, but I found myself expecting a big play at some point because that’s what I’d grown to expect over the last couple of years. Expecting a big play had become a reflex reaction. I guess I’m going to have to retrain my brain.
