Wish The PAC 12 Had Balls

Well, they matter but only in a much more granular sense. I'm just saying in the context of the discussion about CU joining a different conference, the Denver media market isn't really that attractive for college sports

the last round of conference realignment was driven by TV markets as that was still the biggest influencer of media revenue at the time. local TV markets matter far far less today than they did ten years ago. I agree with multiple posts I've seen on this topic -- TV markets will not factor as heavily in the next round of realignment, but rather the biggest factor will be quality of the content that schools are predicted to deliver.
 
That was not the case when the B1G added Maryland or Rutgers. I just don’t think the Denver market is seen by them as substantial enough to warrant an overture.
Different time. Denver represents a top 20 TV market and will likely continue to move up the charts as one of the fastest growing metro areas in the country, but I still don't think other conferences are likely to be banging the table to add CU, mostly because it's a fairly apathetic and small fanbase with a losing brand.
 
Well I don't necessarily agree about that the way things are currently structured. For example if the BIG added Colorado they would up their charge for the Big-10 Network for the entire state because it is now in the footprint. That includes the 17th and 85th biggest tv markets in the country to go along with the rest of the state which is continuing to grow. The Big-12 doesn't really care because they don't have their own network. It didn't work out as well with the Pac-12 because the DirecTV deal was screwed up from the start but the Big-10 has a ton more leverage to exploit that available revenue.

Now if you are talking about the future and how revenue will change for college tv networks over the next 10-15 years then it could become a completely different structure.

Mizzou would also be a huge add for the BIG with the 23rd and 32nd biggest tv markets in the country.
The University of Missouri is an AAU acredited institution, as is CU. The one that is not is Cornholer U.
 
I would actually wager that Nebraska would be a pretty sought after program if there was another round of realignment. Smaller media market but huge and rabid fan base with a brand that doesn't really take a hit even though they suck at sports.

Unfortunately, they would be far more attractive than a larger market with a lukewarm fan base.

I am skeptical about this take. If the TV market doesn’t deliver a significant audience, the two biggest established powerhouse conferences will find it difficult to create additionalnrevenue streams for competitors who don’t bring the eyeballs.

you may very well be right. we probably only have to wait a few years to find out.

You think the SEC would care to go after Northwestern or Boston College to capture the 3rd and 9th largest media markets, respectively? Yes, the size of the market matters, but only if that market actually cares about CFB.
 
Denver is a huge big 10 town though. Watch parties ducking everywhere for Ohio state, Michigan, Iowa and Wisconsin. Being able to charge those fans full price for the big 10 network along with the rest of the state would be huge. The big 10 and the sec have plenty of big programs to drive performance on the field, that isn’t nearly as big of a deal as say the pac 12, big 12 and ACC. They are looking at schools to increase their third tier rights by assembling massive population centers.

Does Nebraska have a loyal fan base? Of course. But that is one that is dwindling by the year in a state that isn’t going to grow much over the coming years.

conversely, Notre Dame brings value to any conference, despite being in the 98th largest media market

this is a good point. people are more mobile than previous generations yet still retain their alma mater loyalty. I can't immediately find a source, but read during the last round of realignment that Phoenix had more B1G alums than Pac alums living there.

FYIW- Denver's TV market is 17th in the United States. That's higher than I thought.
 
The point about B1G transplants in the Denver market is something I hadn’t really considered before. There’s a boatload of those folks here from across the entire conference footprint. I’m constantly amazed at the level of support I see for Ohio State, of all places. It’s like half the state of Ohio moved here. And we gave them Burrito. I think we got the worst of that deal, but I’m willing to listen to counter arguments.

I think there are difficulties in having the conference so spread out but I have no doubt that the SEC would to take schools like North Carolina (10 million people), Virginia (8.5 million people), Maryland, penn state, etc. the difficulty is getting those schools to come over because they know they are going to probably get their ass kicked and the amount of revenue they would gain is pretty small compared to their budgets for the entire school.

Again the big 10 and the SEC will be looking for media markets and in state population because they have leverage with their network demand and partners so they can immediately demand everyone in state to be charged the higher fee. The pac 12 can’t do that because we don’t have the leverage so we need to add schools that give us that demand and leverage (hello Texas and OU).
 
yes, and have alumni all over the US. While being a fantastic data point of why I believe quality will trump media market size, they are admittedly an outlier in this discussion.
Depends on which conference you are talking about. Sec and big 10 just see number of people in state/media market and then $$$&&

You see a ton of it down in Florida too. It’s pretty remarkable actually.

you really have to consider just how big a school tOSU is -- almost 70k students. The closest in the Pac 12 is ASU with ~2/3 the enrollment. any school that large and that highly ranked is going to have alumni all over

I understand how big it is. Still surprises me to see the sheer numbers of Ohio State supporters here.

Why would it? Everyone in the BIG has developed a hatred of nebraska on their own, and they have done quite a good job collectively making that program and fanbase look like the fools that they are. They don't need CU's help.
 
That's the thing, there's no indication that any other P5 conference is interested in CU right now. Which is what I thought Wilner's comment alluded to - where else are we gonna go?

And I don't think he meant that in a demeaning way, just realistically. In other words, we're stuck in this joke of a conference, at least for now.
This round of TV deals is going to start to expire in the next couple of years. The Pac's is first. I think the Big 12 deal expires about a year after ours does.

BC makes a lot more sense than NWU. NWU already has a sweet setup and more money than $EC. $EC would likely look at schools like VA Polytechnical or UVA for the #7 market.

They’re definitely an anomaly given their athletics tradition and status as the most well known catholic university in the US. Most state schools only have a regional draw.
 
I would seriously like to know the amount of new eyeballs the BIG obtained on their network by adding "#1" in Rutgers
A LOT. There are many midwest transplants who live in the tri-state area. The B1GN is in a lot of accessible TV packages that people who have cable get with service. This is why I get everything with my cable here outside of DC.
