2025 Transfer Portal News & Updates

Talked to a buddy who has some connections at Texas Tech. I asked him what is driving TTU all of a sudden being a major NIL player. He said that it was their pro players rallying and leading things, specifically Mahomes and Welker. Mahomes even gave a million bucks specifically to make the softball team elite.
Prior to NIL but an interesting story nonetheless. I had a non-profit org for kids in SoCal, sponsored by adidas for years. On one of my 11 basketballs teams, there was a player whose family is WEALTHY. Billionaire status. The parents both went to UCLA Anderson school of business. As we got close, they shared with me that they were funneling money into the athletic program through sports like rowing. Millions of dollars annually which was routed to the football and basketball programs. I can only imagine if that kind of money was being filtered successfully before NIL, how creative donors and schools are doing this through NIL.

Well, we already have that from any G4 school. There's no lock they'd go to CU when transferring though, open market bidding etc.

I love ****-talking the plight of CSU, but we were so close to being in their new PAC conference along with Oregon State and WSU. So close.
Without CP, we had zero tv appeal, not a ton of fan support, and we had way more in common with the Rams than we did with the top half of P4 football.

With CP, we are a have. A top 10 destination. Rick better figure this out soon.

I wonder what the future is for HS recruiting. I think that where I'm leaning is that the top programs will become increasingly selective. They'll go hard after the guys who are obviously ready to contribute on this stage as a freshman, but I think they'll increasingly let everyone else prove themselves in the "minor leagues" first and then call them up to the show via the portal. Considering that most recruiting classes never returned even a 50% success rate of eventual starters, I could definitely see the norm being for CU and others on our level only signing 10-15 preps per year.
I think we may see a re-emphasis on HS recruiting. The portal has become much more competitive over the last 2 years, with everyone throwing big money at the top names. It's not a sustainable way to build a program. It's going to be more cost effective to recruit kids out of high school, knowing that you'll lose a chunk of them to the portal.

The salary cap levels the playing field

Accuracy won't matter if you can't read the defense or stretch the field.

I feel like this competition is between Koy Detmer and Sefo Liufau

Juju is Koy Detmer with a higher ceiling, but overall a very accurate passer in a slightly smaller frame and has had a lot of good football training

Salter is Sefo, a competitor, a runner, a guy that wants to just get the job done.

Juju has a way higher ceiling and NFL prospects, Salter is a vet who has won games and played good college football and would seem more ready

This will be a great competition and the Buffs will be better for it.

You have watched Juju's tapes and seen how well he reads defenses and places his passes? He is elite

DT is by far the deepest unit on the team
Oatis, Barnes, McNeil, Lightfoot, Tawfiq Thomas, Taureen Carter, Davis Swain, and Hudson. Nwankwo’s little brother also there but I’ve heard he’s a project and likely 2 years away. That’s 8 guys who should factor into the rotation for IDL and include Quincy Wiggins who could also be an inside guy.

I like your Juju comparison as a better Koy--much higher ceiling. The thing with Detmer was the ACL injury in 1995. CD played very sparingly in 93', RS'd in 94' and in 95' was setting things on fire through 3 games (over 1,000 yards passing). In game 4 @#3 A&M, he blew his ACL. Hessler played the rest of the way and CU ended with 10 wins. CD was great coming back in 96' and then was Favre's backup. CD held many CU passing records. IMO, if CD played many more snaps earlier, perhaps he could have avoided the injury. It made sense to RS him in 94' as CU was humming with Kordell and we had a good backup. Although, CD was a JR., he did not have the snaps for that #3 A&M game.

In today's CFB, all the players play earlier and the nutrition/training is decade's ahead, thus I give Juju a totally legit shot to start next year. That said, I'm glad that we have Salter and Staub (for now), such that Juju does not need to be rushed and there is an insurance policy if Juju is banged up; faces adversity during the season; or just not quite ready. I belive his star will really shine as a Soph and Junior, then hopefully onto the NFL.

Honestly crazy we are attractive to DT. Just goes to show the draw Lewis and Sapp have

Salter's got a high ceiling. He's got an absolute cannon, and while he's not Juju or Shedeur, I wouldn't call him inaccurate either. He's got a nice release too and is legitimately fast.

We're in a really good spot at QB.

Koy was never Favres backup. He backed up McNabb.
Your are off on your seasons

As far as Juju being a better Koy, we can tap the breaks on that until he plays a little football for us.
Koy had a 10 year NFL career.

The thing is, he doesn't need to be as accurate if we can use the threat of him running to scheme more open receivers.

Is Pat Shurmur a good QB Coach?

We debate his OC chops, but is there proof or compliments about his QB Coaching ability? Do we have any type of additional QB coaching besides SS2's personal coach last year?

His entire elevation on the NFL job chain was because he got journeyman QBs to have career years a few times, leading to bigger OC jobs and then a HC position. That's his main calling card.

So was Shedeur's private coach and him on the same page? I am still stunned by the lack of focus on Ball Fakes, and focused play execution. Got admit that Bo Nix looks years ahead of Shedeur and I hope he gets a chance to really develop in the NFL, but as a four year college starter, feels a few steps behind

I think that Shurmur's job was more about showcasing Shedeur and some receivers than it was about making them system players. 2025 will be a more accurate representation of Shurmur's system and what he expects from the QB position - particularly because the balance of power has considerably changed and he has 2 QBs who know they are in competition and the job security demands that they follow the script.
