Arizona post-game thread

Someone mentioned earlier that "this team gives up so many TFL that it's ridiculous..." I was curious about that and went back and checked the stats for sacks & TFL to see how we stack up against our conference opponents. Here goes:

SACKS / TFL
UCLA 2/8
CU 3/7

ASU 0/5
CU 2/5

USC 4/16
CU 1/5

UW 1/5
CU 1/4

OSU 1/6
CU 2/5

AZ 5/10
CU 2/5

OPPONENT TOTALS: 13/50
CU TOTALS: 15/34

Our D produces more sacks than our OL gives up. I came away from this thinking that Montez is doing an admirable job of avoiding pressure because that guy seems to be under duress A LOT. Thoughts?

Our OL is fckng putrid and the stats support our eyes: the DL has been updgraded. OL has been the worst unit on the team.

MM is a miracle worker.

He turned Kalil Tate into a Heisman contender as he rushed for a career high 327 yards last year.

He rejuvenated Tate again this year with another career high. This time through the air to the tune of 350 yards and 5 touchdowns.

You can’t make this **** up.

So a couple of things.

This game was lost on about 4 plays.
1) not going for the field goal after the first punt return
2) Montez miss on the fade to ento who was wide
3) the penalty by Maddox before the half to give them a field goal which is completely inexcusable.
4) that fourth down drop by ento late in the game in zona territory. He is a big receiver and needs to bring that down, that is what he is out there for.

We simply cannot make those mistakes and beat what is looking like a much improved Arizona team on the road with the issues we have up front offensively. Tate made some redicilous throws but man I was so much more impressed with Blackmon than I was wigley. He actually got his head around and just needs to be a little strong to the ball and I think he should make some plays down the stretch here. The talent at WR on this team is incredible, which other position group would lose its top theee guys and still make plays. On defense I thought we did a really poor job setting the edge on the week side and Arizona kept getting around the edge for big gains but Tate just looks amazing right now and is definitely healthy.

I agree with the specific plays identified (missing Ento wide open in the end zone was HUGE), but there was a more devastating overall reason for the loss: inability to block with any consistency or force. This game was oddly close all the way to the end. If we can put a hat on a man up front with any push, we can gain a bit of offensive consistency. By the end, the only way we were capable of moving the ball was to have Montez throw quick passes. But without a running game, we faced ears-back pass rush the whole time.

Completely agree, that’s why I said we can’t make those mistakes with the issues we have up front. This team is who they are at this point and that is the weakness of the team so those other guys have to step up.

going to be really hard to rally from this one. we're in free fall. usc cracked the code and everyone else is following the script against us. and, the injuries aren't helping us get it turned around either.

hard to envision another win on the schedule, at least right now.

what's the pirate pinball offense going to do to our secondary?

i am not sure i am emotionally prepared for that. ... and they found liver the next day, curled up in the fetal position, under a ragged Buffalo skin, clutching a bottle of whiskey, and muttering "make it stop"...

wtf happened to this season.

Not relevant to your point, but what the hell....

Not nearly as worried about matching up with Washington State as I am about Utah. I am scared ****less about what that defense might to do montez and these lineman.

Tale of two worries. WSU's O is going to destroy our D. Utah's D is going to destroy our O.

Yeah I think the defense will do okay against WSU, I don’t think there is a chance in hell the offense does anything against Utah.

Montes has helped he's pretty good at getting away from could be tacklers and last night he was outstanding. That said our oline isn't as bad as some people here say. I've said it since USC, this offense has been completely hamstringed by the design of some plays and, even more so, the terrible predictable play calling. Last nights playcalling was chev best all year, still had some really bad calls

I have no idea why you would think that. Every halfway decent QB we've faced has done whatever he's wanted. A couple bad ones also hurt us bad.
Because our front can play against theirs, I like having Lewis and Taylor in the pass game, our corners seem to be getting closer and closer to playing those deep balls better (abrams and Blackmon last night), and I actually like rakestraw in that matchup a little bit. My biggest concern in that game is the coaches having Gamboa our tbere too much. I also know that Utah is going to own our front seven on defense and will likely run the ball at will so they will be able to tee off on Montez when we are tying to play catch up.

I’m in shock. 5-0 and we aren’t going to a bowl game. Unbelievable.

Yes we will. Our players are too talented to not win one of our remaining three, obviously barring insanely bad coaching and playcalling

You’re delusional, the o-line is absolute garbage. And it’s Montez not Montes

Oline is complete crap.

How is the OL’s putrescence even a debate? Not too bad? Whaaa?

Our 5 guys can’t block 3. Our 7 guys can’t block 5.

Montez is running for his life and still keeping us moving the ball forward (just not consistantly).

Montez deserves a real OL, and he could be outstanding.

we dont have an oline...we have 5 soft marshmellows just like our head coach

bamalam’s takes are as good as the 2018 cu football offensive line.

Am I the only one critiquing the playcalling? Chev had his best game last night but his offense doesnt fit this team. Travon is a damn good back but he needs to get a downhill start from pistol or under center. Montez isn't quick enough to be a consistent threat in the read option, he's fast when he gets going but he's not quick. Travon is downhill one cut boom and you don't get that from traditional shotgun running.

Let's hear your brilliant take on that. Please give a response that shows you actually know a little bit about the game besides herp durr the oline sucks
